Making solar accessible: partnering with USDN
Recently, we partnered with the Urban Sustainability Directors Network (USDN) to tackle one of the toughest challenges in renewable energy – getting solar onto social housing and rental properties. The result? Over 100 kW of solar power now benefits communities who traditionally get left behind in the clean energy transition.
What we achieved
Working with USDN, we installed solar systems on:
Two apartment buildings in Sydney, including Roscoe Street (managed by ICLA) and the Emoh Rou Co-operative
10 single-family homes in Glebe, working with local youth services
The numbers tell a powerful story:
113.2 kW of solar installed across 12 sites
Average savings of $437 USD per year for each household
16.2 metric tons of carbon offset annually
But the real win? We proved that solar can work for renters and social housing residents – groups usually locked out of the renewable revolution.
How it works
The magic happened through innovative technology like SolShare, which splits rooftop solar between individual apartment meters. At Roscoe Street, where the housing provider pays electricity bills, the savings get reinvested into better appliances and services for residents. At Emoh Rou, residents see direct savings on their bills – about $160 USD annually per unit.
Lessons for the future
This project taught us valuable lessons about working with older housing stock, engaging early with housing providers, and the importance of having solar experts assess sites quickly. Most importantly, it showed that initial successes create momentum – after seeing the first installations work, the NSW state agency and other partners were eager to expand the program.
What this means for Pingala
This partnership demonstrates exactly what we're about – practical, community-led solutions that share the benefits of clean energy widely. It's proof that with the right partnerships and innovative thinking, we can make solar work for everyone, not just homeowners.
